Humbly I Accept
Here's a thought, scripture, and prayer to guide us.
Thought:
Recently God has been working on me in the arena of humility by helping me understand how to manage my ego. I have mediated a life navigating relationships around my ego and working through how I wanted others to perceive me. I cared a lot. I still care. I do care about how people perceive me, but that’s not the worst part. I don’t want to care as much as I do, but understanding what’s in me entertaining the potential of what others might think reminded me Jesus cared about this too. He cared how others perceived him and lived to have them perceive him as Master. Some did, some didn’t. Some still do and some still don’t. Jesus, though, didn’t cling to how others perceived him or that others would perceive him or not because this wouldn’t change who he was. He clinged to the Father’s perception of him and aimed to get others to cling to the Father. Paul wrote about Jesus releasing his cling in Philippians and said we ought to do the same.
Scripture:
“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
Prayer:
Father help us cling to only you— not ourselves, others, or things. Help us to empty ourselves, like Jesus did, of all things that are not of you so we can be filled with just you. Lead others to us for conversation so we can share with them about how awesome you are with the bold goal of helping them know you and be known by you. Amen
