Mirror, Mirror… in our face
Here's a thought, scripture, and prayer to guide us.
Thought:
A piece of glass becomes a reflective surface. We use it to look at our reflection and see what we look like. Sometimes we enjoy what stares back at us and other times we are abhorred by the site. The reality of the mirror is no matter how we look at it, it’s always reflecting back at us what is looking into it. When God gave his word to the prophets, he held up a mirror for them to see themselves. In that mirror, they saw their reality – and they abhorred it. They abhorred it so much that they didn’t continue to look. So God, in his way, loved them so much that he let them turn their back on his mirror and gave them over to the consequences of their choices. This is also how he loves us today. Scripture says God gives us the desires of our heart. That doesn't mean he's going to give us what we want. He gives us over to the feelings, inclinations, choices, and actions of our heart (Jeremiah 17:9). He allows us to pursue what's in our heart. He gives us that free choice. That's how much he loves us. He loves us so much that he allows us to not choose him. God is a gentleman. He invites, never forces, because he wants us to love him in return.
Scripture:
“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” Psalm 37:4 CSB
Prayer:
Father God help us remember the first part of that verse is the necessary key to unlock the second part so it actually happens. Help us align our heart with yours, our will with yours, our desires with yours, to delight in who you are first and foremost above all other things and people so that then we have confident hope your Kingdom will come here on earth (on the land) as it is in heaven (in the skies). Mold and shift and shape our hearts and our minds to be like Christ’s heart and mind. In Jesus name amen.
