How to be a Sheep with Purpose

Here's a thought, scripture, and prayer to guide us.

Thought:

Sheep are known to be stupid animals. In our American culture, sheep are looked at as people who are weak and just blindly follow whatever the trend. I think the adversary in the world has used this to distort the beauty of being a sheep in the context of what Jesus taught us. Truly, we don’t want to be sheep like the world sees, but even if they see us in a way that they don’t like, that’s okay because our aim is not to seek their approval. We want to be like Jesus and follow him as our Shepherd to be approved alone by God. Shepherds lead, guide, and care for their sheep. 🐑 God created human beings so he can lead, guide, and care for us. This is what David recognized when he verbalized the LORD is his Shepherd (Psalm 23:1). Putting that into words places a posture of surrender and submission that allows him to lead us, guide us, and care for us as our Shepherd.

What if we practiced this same exercise like David put into words by answering these three questions today:

  • What is one thing Jesus is leading me into this season?

  • What is one thing Jesus is guiding me out of this season?

  • How can I allow Jesus to care for me this season?

Scripture:

"The LORD is my Shepherd." Psalm 23:1a CSB

Prayer:

Father God help us to surrender as your sheep who follow and listen to our Master as he leads, guides, and cares for us in Jesus name amen.
