Perfect is not what we think it is

Here's a thought, scripture, and prayer to guide us.

Thought:

Being perfect is not what we think it is.

Jesus commands us to be "perfect" as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48). The word for “perfect” that Jesus used means something a bit different than what we commonly associate with that word in English. This is the Greek word “teleos” which means maturity, accomplishment, fulfillment, complete, perfect. It does not mean being sinless or mistake-free. Instead, teleos refers to achieving the purpose for which we were made, reflecting God's nature by loving others generously and selflessly. Our goal is to become complete and whole, faithfully mirroring God's own character and love.

Let’s shift our thinking about Biblical perfection to be what Jesus intended for us to do in this case by living intentionally to become mature, complete, and strive toward the end goal of continually being spiritually formed into Christlikeness. That’s when God gives us character traits and personality shifts that come only from time with him. When we are with him to hear his voice each day spoken through his Word, and are in relationship with him each day through prayer, he forms us into Christ likeness, which manifests from the Holy Spirit fruit (Galatians 5). As we pursue God more and more each day, he curates within us to be his people who emulate Jesus and that is the goal. That is perfection.

Scripture:

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48 CSB

Prayer:

Father God lead us to become perfect as you are perfect by truly experiencing your love and knowing we are chosen by you because you love us. We want to love you and need your help to do that with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. Help us hear your voice in your Word and live life in prayer. In Jesus name Amen.
