Are you a shamer or discipler?

Here's a thought, scripture, and prayer to guide us.

Thought:

The opposite of shame is not pride. When we have a sense of shame the cure is not to generate a sense of pride even if it’s good pride like pride for our achievements or pride for a child or friend or our favorite sports team or how well we bake brownies or lasagna or crochet a bracelet or quilt. Those are all good things to be proud of, however none will resolve our sense of shame that exists deep within the caverns of our soul caused by our own sin or sin’s impact caused by another. The worst yet is when we shame someone else for being who they are when they are simply at a different place in their walk with Christ. Instead of shaming we are called to walk alongside them and lead them to Jesus by living the way he lived. That's discipleship.

Scripture:

"Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too." Philippians 2:3-4 NLT

Prayer:

Father God help us not look down on others or position ourselves as greater than someone else in the posture of our mind or heart. Activate your humility within us to think and live with the mind of Christ by elevating others even when they are different than us or intolerable. In Jesus name amen!!
