The Water Your Soul’s Thirsting For
Ever hear about Poon Lim, the Chinese sailor stranded on an 8-foot wooden raft during World War II? He was surrounded by water but dying of thirst because it was salt water. Desperate, he drank it, but saltwater does the opposite of quenching thirst. The more he drank, the thirstier he got— it was a slow, tormenting kind of dehydration.
That’s a snapshot of life for many of us today. We’re thirsty— thirsty for love, peace, being seen, security, and purpose. And we’re surrounded by options, all the “saltwater” in the world that promises to satisfy. We drink up relationships, achievements, and distractions like social media, TV, and doom scrolling, but we end up feeling emptier than before.
Jesus Offers Something Different
In John 7, Jesus spoke to people like us. He said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” He was in the middle of a huge festival, surrounded by people who, deep down, were just as spiritually dehydrated as get today.
You might be reading this with loneliness eating at you, the weight of not being good enough, or the nagging shame from past mistakes. Those things are real, and they can dry up your soul. But Jesus says, “Come to me, and I’ll give you living water.”
So, what water are you drinking? Are you trying to fill your soul with things that only leave you thirstier? Or are you ready to turn to the source of living water?
Jesus doesn’t offer a temporary fix. His living water doesn’t just fill you up; it flows out of you. When he fills our soul, the joy, peace, belonging, and purpose he brings starts spilling over into the lives of others. You can and will become a source of refreshment to the people around you as long as you are drinking his living water daily by consuming his Word. Let’s pause and take that in. Jesus wants to give us water that satisfies. Real satisfaction. Real life. Will you take him up on that offer today?
Scripture
“On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” John 7:37 CSB
Prayer
Father- We confess we’ve tried to fill our lives with the saltwater in the world— things that don’t satisfy us. You are the living water bringing peace, purpose, and joy. Help us come to you whenever we’re feeling empty so you can fill us and then pour your living water life out to those around us. In Jesus name Amen.
